That’s the gist of a web page I linked to recently while checking out an ad submitted to Page & Spine.
There’s nothing new about the philosophy of cooperate and graduate. Students have probably pooled work since the days of wax tablets. Paraphrasing the particulars of another student’s research saves uncounted hours of slogging through the same old sources to produce the same old results. It’s what comes of petrified professors assigning topics so old they are thoroughly explored in aboriginal petroglyphs.
So why did this site bother me?
This business isn’t a group of classmates—peers—exchanging notes. Nor is it a ghost writing or editing service whose professionals polish material researched and supplied by the credited author. In using editing/ghost writing services, the person whose name appears in the byline has found and assembled the information presented under his name; he’s processed the facts and reached his own conclusion. Someone else has just prettied it up.
No, this site is enticing students of all ages and levels of endeavor to commission the creation of a document for which they will pay and take credit without input, without effort, without accomplishment, pretending to the knowledge contained therein. That's the way you want your future doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc. to gain his/her credentials, right?
The owner of the site is encouraging academic fraud. And students--struggling, time-crunched, or lazy--are being led to believe that pretended knowledge is just as valid as the real thing.
Page & Spine doesn’t support this misuse of writing talent.
